The Highline Canal Underpass project consisted of removing and replacing the existing headwalls and constructing a new trail. The headwalls and concrete path were designed with a shallow foundation system to not interfere with 2 large existing gas mains. Shoring of the existing roadway and excavation needed to take place. There was 320 cubic yards of structural concrete and 1,050 square yards of concrete bike path placed. The underpass had new lighting, handrails and architectural metal fabric was used to prevent graffiti and to visually enhance the structure.
This project was successful due to careful planning and diligent collaboration with public and private agencies. Clever and prudent design and engineering solutions gave this project a unique character that is extremely functional and easy on the landscape. Great leadership and careful stewardship of resources were essential to deliver a much needed trail underpass that will safely transport pedestrians along a regional recreational facility appreciated by the entire community.
