CEI and Muller Engineering teamed up to successfully complete this design-build project involving the reconstruction of approximately two miles of two-lane urban arterial roadway. The project included removal of the existing roadway and construction of a three-lane roadway with curb & gutter, 10-foot shared-use trail, on-street bike lanes, and other typical improvements associated with an arterial roadway. The project also included a modern roundabout, a signalized intersection, and a pedestrian hybrid (HAWK) signal.
During the design phase, CEI and Muller incorporated value engineering into alignment and typical section changes that reduce right-of-way and construction cost by over two hundred thousand dollars.
The original design of the roadway improvement included 5-foot attached sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. With public input favoring a more pedestrian friendly and context sensitive facility, the shared use trail concept was implemented along one side of the roadway in conjunction with bus pullouts and bike lanes for commuter biking, resulting in a truly multi-modal facility.
